Where They Stand, Part Four: COVID-19

Given the current division and political debate, there’s greater commonality among the two presidential candidates and their parties in approaches to dealing with the pandemic than you might think.

“President Trump’s biggest mistake in the pandemic has been his own shifting rhetorical leadership,” according to The Wall Street Journal. “He’s moved from public nonchalance to worst-case shutdowns back to overconfidence and in recent weeks more focused concern. He has suggested that triumph over the virus is just around the corner, which defies reality, while minimizing the disease’s severity.”

Democratic governors have generally favored lockdowns more than Republicans, but on specifics candidate Biden is suggesting steps that have already taken place under the Trump Administration. These steps include ramping up testing, accelerating production of vaccine candidates while they’re still in clinical trials, and working with companies to have them produce needed medical supplies.

While it typically takes a decade to produce a new vaccine, thanks to Operation Warp Speed, several vaccine candidates are already in Phase 3 of clinical trials.
